Renault reveals all-new Pulse hatchback

Renault reveals all-new Pulse hatchback Renault took a big step towards becoming a serious player in the small car market by revealing it's all new hatchback for India. Known as the Pulse, this car is basically a mildly altered version of Nissan's rather clever Micra.
Under the skin, the two are basically the same. They share the same lightweight  V platform chassis, the same basic suspension, the same gearbox and the same set if engines as well. These include a 1.2 three cylinder petrol and a 1.5 turbo diesel.
What Renault has altered however are the looks. While the basic architecture of the car, with it's large arched roof and big cabin, remains Renault has changed the nose dramatically. The front end is now much sharper looking, with its raised crisply styled lights, almost Hyundai like hexagonal grille and a typical Renault matt black center section.  The car has a much stronger chin than the Micra, the rear has been mildly altered and Renault say there could be an even sportier version of the car on the cards too. The interiors of the Pulse however are almost identical to those of the Micra, right down to colours and shades.
The Pulse (codename: B58)  will be the French car makers third offering in six months; the Fluence saloon and Koleos SUV being the earlier two. The Pulse will be built at Renault-Nissans Chennai plant alongside the Micra and Renault are expected to price it at a slight premium over the Nissan. One of the  big seling-points of the Pulse will be a unique 2+2 year warranty that will be offered on the Pulse.

Renault Pulse to be revealed on October 29

Renault Pulse to be revealed on October 29Renault is all-set to unveil the Pulse compact car for India, on 29th October 2011.
The Pulse (codename: B58)  will be the French car makers third offering in six months; the Fluence saloon and Koleos SUV being the earlier two.
The Pulse is based on Renault-Nissan alliances V-platform that also underpins Nissans Micra hatchback and Sunny saloon and will be built at Renault-Nissans Chennai plant alongside the Micra.
The Pulses dimensions will be near-identical to the Micra and likewise should weigh less than a tonne which will reap huge dividends in the terms of fuel.  While the two cars will share many components including engines namely the 1.2 litre petrol and the 1.5 litre diesel, the Pulse will be easily identifiable as a Renault and willlook different from the Micra. The nose, headlights and grill will be very different and so will the shape of the rear hatch and tail lights included However, the two cars could share the dashboard design as tooling for a new dashboard entails considerable expense.
Apart from the Micra itself, the Pulse will compete with the likes of the Maruti Wagon R, Hyundai i10, Honda Brio and Maruti Swift and will be priced around Rs 4-5 lakh.

Renault Koleos review, test drive

The face-lifted Renault Koleos made its world debut in India on September 8th, pipping the official launch in China by a few days. To be first in the world may not be of much significance to Indian customers but its a statement by the French car maker on the importance of the Indian market. With the Koleos, Renault wants to take its brand further upmarket with its fully loaded SUV but is it up to the job? A long drive from Bengaluru into the forest of Karnataka reveals the answers.
The styling changes with the face-lift have yielded a smarter,
more conventional looking car. If you liked the Fluence, you will like the Koleos. The headlamps have a similar shape and house projector lamps. The two piece grille of the original car has now been replaced by a big chrome affair with three horizontal slats and a big Renault logo in the middle. The rest of the car remains the same.
For India, the Koleos comes in only one variant but its packed to the gills with kit. Standard equipment includes six airbags, cruise control, parking sensors, automatic 4-wheel drive, and rain and light sensors. The highlight though is the 8 speaker BOSE music system that is a headbangers delight. However, Renault could improve the interior quality as the wide expanse of the dash top looks rather bland. The plastics could also be more tactile. However, the switches and the controls for the air-con and music system have a nice knurled finish and are great to use.
Powering the car is a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 150bhp of power and is mated to a six speed automatic gearbox. While the figures are impressive on paper, out on the road the Koleos lacks punch. The mid range feels a tad weak and you miss that strong, spikey surge of a turbo-diesel when you get into the meat of the power band. However, the linear and lag-free nature of the engine encourages you to drive without a sense of urgency. And that's just as well, because when you rev it hard and past 3800rpm and there's a distinct vibration that creeps into the cabin. The gearbox can be a bit slow for spirited driving but shifting to manual mode enhances the experience dramatically
The suspension is one of the highlights of the Koleos. It is pliant for the better part, soaking up bad roads with utter ease though an underlying firmness can be felt at lower speeds and over sharp edges where a mild thump sometimes filters through. Despite its size and weight, the Koleos is easy to drive and its car-like manners inspires a lot of confidence. No doubt, the high stance translates to a bit of body roll through corners but the well-sorted suspension ties the Koleos down nicely and the overall body control and stability is very impressive. The electrically assisted power steering is quite accurate and offers sufficient feel which adds to the driving pleasure.
On the inside, the Koleos rear bench is pretty spacious and supportive with the right amount of bolstering and adequate knee-room. Even the front seats (fully-powered for the driver) are comfortable, managing to keep aches or pains at bay even after a long drive. There are some neat touches too like the way the rear seats flip forward with the simple tug of lever and the clam shell opening of the tail gate which enhances its versatility.
The Koleos makes a strong case as a user-friendly SUV with its compact dimensions, automatic gearbox and long list of equipment. In its latest avatar it looks pretty good and is reasonably well finished. However, performance is far from scintillating and the Koleos despite its equipment list doesnt feel as premium on the inside as its Rs 22.99 lakh price tag suggests. It's a smart SUV that's not so smartly priced.

Renault Launches Koleos SUV

The Renault Koleos SUV has arrived at our shores. Priced at Rs 22.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), this SUV is powered by a 2.0-litre, 150bhp, all-aluminium common-rail diesel engine with variable valve timing. This is the same M9R unit that powers the X-Trail, coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. This diesel motor, like in the X-trail, is quite rev-happy and packs in loads of punch once you cross 2000rpm.
We drove the Koleos in Europe last year and found it a capable and luxurious SUV; the interior fit and finish is not upto German standards, but theres a solidity to the interiors that is a cut above its Korean peers. The plastics are hardwearing, the switchgear feels solid and the vents dont flap around. The trim feels tightly screwed down and hence rattles are unlikely to creep in, which bodes well for extended use.
The Koleos comes loaded with 17-inch alloy wheels, a split tail-gate, cruise control, tray tables behind front seats, a Bose sound system with Bluetooth, steering-mounted audio controls, six airbags and a five-year, 10,000km anti-rust warranty.
