Volkswagen reveals Cross Coupe concept

Volkswagen has showcased an all-new SUV concept at the Tokyo Motor Show. Known as the Cross Coup� concept, it hints at design themes of all future SUV�s from Volkswagen stable.
The Cross Coup� previews the bold new look of its Volkswagen�s second-generation Tiguan compact SUV. Sitting on
the German carmaker�s versatile new MQB platform, the new four-seater, four-wheel drive petrol-electric hybrid is officially described as a cross between a four-door coup� and compact SUV, which has led many to speculate that Volkswagen is considering a second compact off-roader model in the mould of the Range Rover Evoque.
However, Volkswagen sources close to design boss Walter de Silva have confirmed to Autocar that the Cross Coup� has a broader brief in previewing a new design lineage that will be adopted by all of the company�s upcoming SUV models, including the next Tiguan due out in 2014.
�We won�t rule out the possibility of adding a sportier SUV to the Volkswagen line-up at some time. But the main message with the Cross Coup� is its styling, which stands for the future of SUV design at Volkswagen,� Autocar was told.
The Cross Coup� combines front-end styling elements first seen on the Tex and Go concepts, penned by Volkswagen-owned Giugario, wheeled out at the Geneva motor show earlier this year, with heavily sculptured surfaces throughout. It has a highly defined shoulder � or �tornado line� as de Silva refers to it � higher waistline, shallow side glass, heavily angled tailgate, distinctive wheel arch design and 20-inch alloy wheels shod with substantial 265/45 profile tyres.
The five-door Cross Coup� is both considerably bolder than the current-generation Tiguan, whose design dates back to 2005 and a former Volkswagen design team headed by Murat Gunak.
Volkswagen has provided its latest concept with a classy Audi-esque cabin, with a sweeping dashboard whose various horizontal design elements mirror those of the exterior, and a hi-tech instrument display combining traditional analogue and the latest in computer-enhanced graphics. It also has grab handles incorporated into the centre pod and four heavily contoured seats separated by a high-set centre tunnel which is used to store a battery that powers the concept�s electric motors.
At 4345mm in length, 1868mm in width and 1523mm in height, the Cross Coup� is 125mm shorter, 58mm wider and a significant 177mm lower than today�s first-generation Tiguan. It also rides on a wheelbase that is 26mm longer at 2630mm � allied to tracks that up by 15mm at the front and by 43mm at the rear at 1585mm and 1613mm respectively. Nominal boot space underneath the rear windows is put at 380 litres � or 90 litres less than the Tiguan, rising to 1230 litres when the rear seats are folded away.
Powering the Cross Coup� is a petrol-electric hybrid system capable of providing drive to either the front wheels or all four wheels via a seven-speed, double-clutch gearbox, depending on the driving conditions. It combines Volkswagen�s familiar turbocharged 1.4-litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection TSI petrol engine producing 148bhp and 21.4kgm of torque with a pair of brushless electric motors � one sited up front delivering 54bhp and 18.3kgm and a larger one at the rear with 114bhp and 27.5kgm. The system is calibrated to provide a maximum 261bhp.
Energy for the electric motors is supplied by a battery mounted low down within the centre tunnel of the floorpan. Rated at 9.8kWh and operating at a maximum 370 volts, the lithium ion unit can be charged both on the run through the recovery of kinetic energy (both on a trailing throttle and under braking) and via plug-in means with conventional mains power.
Volkswagen claims an all-electric range of 40km at typical city speeds in front-wheel drive mode, at which a clutch is actuated to disconnect the petrol engine from the drive process when there is sufficient battery charge.
In a move aimed at reducing weight, Volkswagen has replaced the conventional mechanical driveshaft with a newly developed electric driveshaft that sees the rear wheels driven exclusively by the rear electric motor. In four-wheel-drive mode, the rear electric motor is fed electrical energy from the front electric motor, which then acts as a generator powered by the petrol engine. All up, the new concept car is claimed to weigh 1748kg � 128kg more than the heaviest of today�s Tiguan models, the 2.0 TDI, distributed 58 percent to the front axle and 42 percent to the rear.
Despite its relative weight, Volkswagen claims a 0-100kph time of just 7.0sec � placing the Cross Coup� 0.8sec ahead of the most powerful Tiguan model of today, the 2.0 TSI, in outright straight-line performance.
Top speed, however, is capped at just 200kph on a combination of petrol and electric power or 115kph when relying on electric power alone.

2011 VW Jetta review, test drive




At first glance, you may think this is the VW Vento, but upon closer inspection you will realise that it is the all-new Volkswagen Jetta. For a car that�s making a fresh start, to be likened to its cheaper sibling can�t be a good thing. But there�s an upside too, VW has unified the look of all its latest-generation models. It�s also easy to mistake the Jetta for the bigger and more expensive Passat, which shares the same styling lineage.
The new Jetta really looks far removed from the model it replaces. The bland, rounded shape and soft contours are replaced by crisper (but equally bland) horizontal lines. The nose is the most interesting bit of the car with its wide, horizontal grille, angular lamps and a tray-shaped �splitter�. The overall styling is best defined as a clean and uncluttered.
The new car has grown in every dimension; it is now 90mm longer than its predecessor and gets an extra 58mm in the wheelbase, which hints at the best-in-class interior space. Despite all the extra sheet metal, the new Jetta weighs just 25kg more than before.
Step inside the Jetta and it feels like a mini-Passat, more than a grown up Vento with top-notch plastics, and exemplary fit and finish. The chunky steering wheel feels great to hold. The steering-mounted buttons are small but have a wonderfully tactile feel. The air-con vents feel solid too and the overall heft of the dashboard and door pads reveal the durable build of the car.
The new Jetta is better specced too, but the small details that made the previous Jetta special are missing. The driver gets a 12-way power adjustable seat, including lumbar support, and finding the perfect driving position is easy. The front seats are generous but a touch flat and you get synthetic fabric instead of leather seats. The top-of-the-line Highline variant gets eight airbags, while the Trendline and Comfortline variants get six.
The most glaring oversight in the new Jetta is the missing dual-zone climate control. Instead, it gets a simple air-con unit and though it�s still electro-mechanically controlled, there isn�t even a digital temperature readout. To make up, VW has given the Jetta other goodies like iPod connectivity, Park Distance Control with display on the central infotainment system, and daytime running headlights.
Moving to the rear, this VW has the most comfortable backseat we have seen in any Rs 15-20 lakh car. The �hip-point� is nice and high so you sit more relaxed, legroom is class-leading and the seat base is generous and superbly contoured. If there is a fault, it�s with the cushioning which is a touch too hard and the backrest that�s a wee too upright. The rear seats now get an armrest and a 60:40 split. The boot capacity is a good 510-litre.
Under the hood, the 1986cc, 108bhp motor has been replaced by the 138bhp version of the same turbo-diesel engine. For the moment, VW is offering the new Jetta with just this single diesel engine which comes with six-speed manual and automatic options. There is no petrol option yet, but we understand a 1.4 TSI version is expected sometime in 2012.
The diesel motor is not the quietest of motors and though it�s not really intrusive you can�t miss its characteristic gruffness, especially at higher revs. There�s minimal turbo-lag and we just love the strong tug you get from low revs. Performance is more than adequate and there�s always a surplus of power and the swathe of torque, most of it low down in the rev range. But the DSG gearbox can make tight overtaking a tricky affair as well. There�s a huge delay in power delivery when you floor the throttle and then suddenly the car just takes off.
The way to work around this is to drive in manual mode which, apart from being good fun (the paddle-shifters feel terrific), keeps the engine in the right cog for instant overtaking. The six-speed manual is slick and precise like before but it�s mated to an engine that doesn�t like to be revved hard.
On the twisty roads, the new Jetta�s safe and benign handling was immediately evident. The steering, though accurate and well weighted, is rather numb and doesn�t bristle with feel. The gentle responses and the leisurely manner in which the Jetta turns into corners doesn�t make it overtly sporting.
The ride is again fantastic and the Jetta dispatches bumps with ease. The suspension feels a touch more damped than before. However, on bad roads at low speeds, you can distinctly feel the underlying firmness in the suspension. But the ride is never uncomfortable.
VW has priced the base Trendline at Rs 14.12 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), but as you move up to the Highline DSG which costs Rs 3.74 lakh more, the Jetta appears a bit pricey. But, if money isn�t the primary factor and what you want is a comfortable, well-built executive saloon with a bit of class, there�s nothing that fits the bill as well as the new Jetta.

Production is about ready to begin at our �Pacheco� plant in Buenos Aires, Argentina.


The Amarok is launching worldwide in a four-door version with �double cab� � a �single cab� will debut in the first half of 2011. Conceptually and stylistically, the Amarok � up to 5.25 meter long � is a pick-up that looks like it came right out of the pages of a stylish copybook. Its body, set upon a ladder frame, clearly reflects properties of the new Volkswagen design DNA. As usual, the emphasis here is on horizontal lines, a clear interplay of surfaces and precision.


Unifying the horizontal headlights and grille into a single design element is a characteristic of the Volkswagen face for the new era. The louvres and decorative trim of the radiator grille are styled with a distinctive love for details. Extending back from the front face is a surface that develops over the fender contour to the side windows and encloses them in an arch. The defined curvatures of the side panels and engine bonnet lend the sculpted Amarok a truck-like stability supported by amply sized wheel housings.


Finally, the VW logo crowns the smooth surface of the tailgate, framed by rear lights whose distinctive signature is a characteristic night design. Even in the styling of the bumper and its form fit to the truck body, the high standards of its designers show through, and this sets the Amarok apart from the competitive field as a genuine Volkswagen with quality and precision.

2011 Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet Concept is a dressed in firespark metallic paint, the car features an aggressive GTI body kit, a lowered suspension and front/rear spoilers. Other highlights include gloss black accents, red brake calipers and 19-inch alloy wheels.

To spruce up the cabin, designers added Nappa leather upholstery, two-tone seat belts, and aluminum door sill plates.

ABT Sportsline is currently working flat out on the Kempten version of the new VW Beetle. Plenty of heart and soul is also put into the development of the components, as Hans-J�rgen Abt underlines. After all the General Manager of the world�s largest tuner of vehicles from the Volkswagen group still raves about his first �bug� from Wolfsburg: �We implanted a 90 HP engine from a VW Bus into the Beetle, and gave it a pert bodywork, front spoiler lip and a rear spoiler. The car was real fun to drive, particularly on the windy roads here in Bavaria.�

The new Beetle should also be an agile fun car, so a real Speedle. Like its successful predecessor which was built over 50 years ago, it also has to be completely reliable. A Beetle runs and runs and runs � that was how it was and how it has to be in the future. �With regards to performance improvements we can only look at combining maximum enjoyment with maximum reliability and everyday usability in balanced ABT POWER packages�, explains Hans-J�rgen Abt. As a result the engines of the ABT Beetle are currently undergoing extensive testing, which is why the exact performance data will only be supplied later.
?These levels are realistic, based on the experience of the Development Department at ABT: with the 1.2 TSI the series standard 105 HP (77 kW) will be increased to around 140 HP (103 kW), while with the 1.4 TSI (series standard: 160 HP/118 kW) around 210 HP (154 kW) can be expected. �The two-litre turbo VW offers 200 HP or 147 kW, and we expect that the ABT version will provide 230/240 HP�, says Hans-J�rgen Abt. The diesel versions of the Beetle will be economically-conscious Speedles: the 1.6 litre diesel engine will provide 125 HP (92 kW) instead of 105 HP (77 kW), and the 2.0 TDI will have 170 HP or 125 kW (series standard: 140 HP/103 kW). In this economy, the Tiguan will disappoint a lot of shoppers because it�s one of priciest SUVs in its class. Still, the price is fair for what you get: a nice interior and attractive exterior styling that reflect the Tiguan�s German roots.
Starting at about $24,000, the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the most expensive affordable compact SUVs. Reviewers, however, do like what you get for nearly $24,000: standard Bluetooth technology, sporty car-like driving dynamics and a high-quality German interior. �The 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan offers a different flavor in a vanilla class by trading some practicality for a top-notch cabin and European driving manners," says Edmunds.

However, at this price, the Tiguan could be better. First, cargo space is on the small side, making this compact SUV less than ideal for families with young children. Second, the Tiguan uses premium fuel and has one of the lowest fuel economy ratings in the class. Third, once shoppers add features like all-wheel drive and a navigation system, the Tiguan quickly approaches $30,000.

That said, the Tiguan is the only German car in this class, which means you�ll have to check out luxury compact SUVs if you want a larger selection of European vehicles. These cars start at about $32,000 and can get really expensive once you add options. In this light, the Volkswagen Tiguan is a steal for budget shoppers who want European luxury for less.

Other SUVs to Consider
If you can pass on the Tiguan�s sporty driving dynamics, German nameplate and meager cargo room, there are plenty of affordable compact SUVs that will meet your needs. Let�s start with the Hyundai Tucson, one of the most affordable cars in the class that sips fuel and doesn�t offer a skimpy features list. The Tucson averages 23/31 mpg city/highway with six-speed automatic transmission. It also offers nice interior options like USB connectivity, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel and Bluetooth for about $22,000 when you choose the GLS trim. This is a great deal when you compare the Tucson GLS to the Tiguan�s base price.

The Honda CR-V surpasses the Tiguan when it comes to cargo space and utility. Made for families on the go, the CR-V�s cargo can hold 72.9 cubic feet of stuff with the seats folded. It also has an interior cargo shelf and cubbies that make organizing a breeze for busy parents. Starting at about $22,000, the CR-V is priced affordably, but can get expensive when you added extra features.

2010 Volkswagen Cars Up! Lite Diesel Electric Hybrid Concept Car

The Up Lite concept car is the harbinger of Volkswagen's new small car platform that should bear fruit in the form of a production Up Lite as early as the second half of 2011. The Up! Lite concept car ontinues the Volkswagen strategy of offering high-tech and high-end quality in all of its vehicle classes, making progress affordable for every car driver. The Up! Lite was designed to be a versatile vehicle that makes trips into the city, commutes to work and naturally long trips as well significantly less expensive and more eco-friendly.
The new concept car, based on Volkswagen�s New Small Family (the Up! models), incorporates a variation on the two-cylinder TDI hybrid powertrain from the L1 concept car unveiled earlier this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This small turbo-diesel hybrid possesses a small physical footprint--being much smaller than the VW Golf--and a super small carbon footprint, reaching an astronomical 70 US mpg fuel economy on the EU testing cycle. Volkswagen staged the world premiere of the Up! Lite concept car at the LA Auto Show.
Naturally, on the Up! Lite there is nothing lacking in comfort or safety. ESP is on board, airbags are on board, ample space is on board, highly advanced information and control features are on board, and it is good to know that occupants are enclosed and protected by a highly innovative safety frame of aluminium, steel and carbon fiber.
The Volkswagen concept car has a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph) and accelerates to 100 km/h in a respectable 12.5 seconds (0-60 mph in 12 seconds). The Volkswagen Up! Light with its extremely efficient engine might be the perfect example to exemplify this. Ultra light (less than 700 kilograms / around 1,500 pounds) it achieves a mileage of 2.44 liters for a 100 km (70 MPG).
The centerpiece of the Up! Lite powertrain is the newly designed 0.8 TDI two-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with a power of 38 kW / 51 PS. Furthermore, the electric motor (10 kW) � designed as a pulse start module (starter, alternator and E-drive) � also reduces the load of the TDI, provides added propulsion (boosting) and works to recover kinetic energy (regenerative braking). During boost phases � e.g. in a quick passing maneuver � the TDI and E-motor combine for a total power of 48 kW / 65 PS. Incidentally, a version of the TDI used in the Up! Lite was also used aboard the L1 concept car that Volkswagen presented in September at the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt.
2010 Volkswagen Cars Up! Lite Diesel Electric Hybrid Concept Car
In two of its operating phases, the hybrid drive of the Up! Lite was designed to operate without any TDI propulsion at all. First phase: In so-called coast-down, activated by the driver taking his or her foot off the gas pedal (car coasts, TDI engine is shut off). Second phase: Over shorter distances, e.g. in residential areas, the E-motor can power the Up! Lite all by itself. In this case, a lithium-ion battery supplies the energy. Since it is capable of pure electric driving, the configuration is classified as a full hybrid. Shifting work is handled by a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) like the one used in the new Polo. Moreover, the Volkswagen is equipped with a Stop-Start system.
